  1. What is the On-line Learning Laboratory?

The On-line Learning Laboratory is a graded, self-paced program in which students may receive credit for courses accessible through the Internet.  The courses are compliant with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).

B.     Who may qualify for this program?

§         A high school student who may need to make-up class work because of extended illness or other extenuating circumstances.

§         A high school student who wants to graduate with his/her class but is lacking one to two credits to do so and these credits are not available for completion at their home school or through regular classes at Open Campus (OC) by August of the student’s graduating year.

§         Other students as determined by OC Guidance and Administration or their designee.

  1. What is the process for the Student/Parent/School?

a.       The home high schools refer the student to OC as they would refer any student.

b.       The OC counselor determines the eligibility of the student for the program before the student is enrolled for the On-line course.

c.       The student and the On-line Laboratory teacher will meet for laboratory orientation.  A contract is signed by the student, program expectations are explained and a weekly schedule is determined by the On-line Laboratory teacher.

d.       Student completes course(s).  Periodic progress reports are mailed to the parents.

  1. How long does it take for a student to finish a course?

Minimum time spent in the On-line Learning Laboratory is 140 hours or more spent on-line per course credit. Students are expected to be present five days a week during their assigned blockMost courses will require more time than 140 hours.  The courses require above overall academic effort.  Course completion is self-paced and requires independent motivation.  The program has a rolling enrollment, meaning students will enter and exit the program without regard to semester beginning or end.

E.     W hat happens when the student finishes the On-line Learning Laboratory courses?

Students generally enroll in one course at a time.  Only with review and approval of the OC principal may a student take two courses simultaneously.  Once a student has successfully completed one course, s/he may begin the next course in his/her series.  With permission of the OC and home school principals, a student may be enrolled in both a regular high school, Open Campus and the OC On-line Learning Laboratory Program.

F. What happens if the student has an Individual Education Program (IEP) and is in Special Education?

Students in a regular school who are inappropriate for the Special Education designation of “consult” at the home school are inappropriate for the designation of “consult” at OC.  Students designated as in need of Special Education services must be reviewed by the IEP Committee at their regular high school before any referral to OC is made.  The IEP Committee must follow the guidelines for IEP Modification.

G. Where is the On-line Learning Laboratory, how can a student get in, and what are the hours?

The On-line Learning Laboratory is located at 273 N. Witchduck Rd. Virginia Beach, VA 23462, Portable 3.  Students will schedule their laboratory/seat time in advance with the guidance counselor who admits them and will report directly to Portable 3.  All students assigned to the On-line Learning Laboratory are required to wear a Student Identification Badge at all times while on campus.  Students must also obtain an OC parking permit, available in the OC main office for a $5 fee.  No one other than the students registered in the program will be allowed into the laboratory.
